Today was our church's challenging outreach to the surrounding community. Our pastor had been working feverishly for weeks compiling address info, creating maps and directions, scoping out local neighborhoods and preparing team binders to enable members to personally witness to those within a 2 mile radius of Holston Creek.
Thom and I had a brief time at home after service to do a few chores before manning the "sign in" table and organizing groups. Nearly 100 people volunteered their Sunday afternoon to knock on doors and present residents with an "Olympic Theme" copy of Mark's gospel containing a clear and understandable version of the path to salvation. There were 29 teams and each team had 24 homes to visit. When we reconvened at the FLC at 5:00 p.m. there was a wide range of experiences to share.
Thom and I had an area of rather low income housing. Some trailers were vacant, many folks chose not to answer our knock and a few politely received our pamphlet. Two houses had open front doors which were abruptly closed as we approached! We were unenthusiastic about our results but there were others who had amazing successes and reached many struggling souls for the Lord.
I'll admit to mixed feelings about this method of outreach. I, for one, will not open my front door for strangers. With that in mind I cannot be cynical of those that do the same. But considering we were not bold or intrusive it would have been nice to have been well received. Oh well......the gospel book was left at every occupied home and hopefully someday will be read and a spirit may be moved by the message contained within. We planted seeds......God will harvest in His time.
Glad to be home for a dinner of leftovers......time for bed....
